In many industrial sectors such as electronics manufacturing, semiconductors, optoelectronics, biopharmaceuticals and precision instrument assembly, electrostatic discharge is an easily overlooked yet high-impact risk. Static electricity generated by friction during human activities, even at voltages undetectable by humans, may damage chips and SMD components and cause product failure. In certain chemical environments, static sparks may even lead to fire or explosion hazards. As basic workwear within the ESD protection system, anti-static coveralls rely on specially treated conductive fabrics to continuously dissipate static charges accumulated on human skin, reduce charge build-up, and block contaminants such as human dandruff and hair from spreading outwards. They are widely adopted in various static-sensitive production zones and are bulk protective equipment purchased by many enterprises.

Fabric performance directly determines the protective effect of anti-static coveralls. Most fabrics use polyester filament as the base material, with conductive fibers woven into the fabric in stripe or grid patterns to form a continuous charge conduction network. When static electricity is generated by human movement, the fabric can disperse and release charges slowly to prevent concentrated charge build-up followed by instantaneous high-voltage discharge. The surface resistance of fabrics must remain steadily within standard ranges. Excessively high resistance prevents timely charge dissipation and causes charge accumulation, while excessively low resistance creates risks of accidental electrical conduction. Fabrics fall into two major categories: reusable washable fabrics and disposable non-woven materials. Reusable types generally feature higher weaving density and superior low-lint performance. After multiple professional cleaning cycles, the conductive fiber structure remains stable, suitable for long-term repeated use in cleanrooms. Disposable styles are mostly SMS non-woven fabrics blended with anti-static additives, ideal for short-term tasks, visitors or temporary maintenance. They can be disposed of directly after use without cleaning and maintenance. According to different cleanroom grades, fabric conductive fiber spacing, weave density and lint control standards are adjusted accordingly. Denser grid fabrics are selected for high-grade clean environments.

Garment structural design balances static protection, dust resistance and wearing comfort. The one-piece style provides full-body coverage to reduce exposed skin and minimize static sources. Elastic cuffs are fitted at wrists and ankles to fit closely on limbs, narrow gaps and block escape of human debris. Some styles are equipped with integrated hoods for full coverage from head to toe to meet requirements of high-grade cleanrooms. The front zipper is fitted with a dust-proof storm flap. Accessories including zippers and hook-and-loop fasteners are all anti-static to avoid new static charges generated by friction between accessories. Low-lint sewing threads are adopted and seams are reinforced to reduce particle pollution from loose thread ends. The ergonomic pattern reserves reasonable room for movement. Workers can perform delicate operations such as soldering, assembly and inspection without limb restriction. Meanwhile, an overly loose cut that increases linting caused by fabric-on-fabric friction is avoided. Enterprises may match anti-static gloves and booties according to workstation demands to form a closed-loop ESD protection system for human bodies.

Product testing is an essential step in procurement to verify whether all indicators of anti-static coveralls meet specifications. Conventional test items include fabric point-to-point resistance, charged charge quantity, breaking strength, fiber shedding volume and washing resistance. Products for high-end semiconductor or precision electronics workshops also require verification in reference to international ESD specifications. During bulk procurement selection, buyers need to verify complete test reports and confirm product indicators match the workshop’s static sensitivity grade and cleanliness class. Protection standards vary greatly among production lines. Wafer fabrication and precision chip assembly workshops follow strict control standards, while ordinary circuit board assembly and incoming inspection stations can adopt standard specifications. Before bulk order placement, sample trial wearing in actual production environments is recommended to inspect fabric fitness, wearing comfort and linting during operation. Bulk delivery can be arranged only after samples pass testing.

In bulk procurement evaluation, enterprises need multi-dimensional assessment. Apart from core anti-static and dust control performance, completeness of size system, fabric durability, packaging plans, delivery cycles and supporting cleaning services also need assessment. A complete size system can cover operators of different body shapes and guarantee proper fit; overly loose garments increase the probability of friction-induced linting. Procurement should evaluate full-lifecycle costs combined with application scenarios and usage frequency. Reusable styles have higher upfront procurement costs but can be used repeatedly, bringing lower unit usage cost over the long term. Disposable anti-static coveralls have low unit purchase prices, yet total consumable expenditure rises continuously under high-frequency usage, and compliant waste disposal must also be considered. If reusable styles are adopted on production lines, enterprises need to confirm whether suppliers can provide professional purified cleaning services for unified maintenance of large quantities of coveralls.

After the equipment is put into service, standardized management and maintenance are critical to sustain stable protective performance over time. Enterprises shall establish standardized workflows for coverall distribution, recycling, cleaning, periodic testing and replacement managed by designated personnel. Reusable coveralls cannot be washed together with ordinary workwear. Only neutral detergent can be used. Bleaching agents and fabric softeners are forbidden, for such chemicals will damage conductive fiber structures and increase fabric linting. After cleaning and drying, coveralls should be packed and stored in clean environments to avoid secondary contamination. Disposable anti-static coveralls are for single use only. After operations, they shall be handled as protective waste and cannot be reused after washing. In routine inspections, garments with fabric damage, exposed conductive filaments or static indicators exceeding standards after repeated use or washing must be replaced promptly. Training should also be provided for workshop staff to standardize gowning procedures, because improper wearing will directly weaken anti-static and dust-proof performance.

Anti-static coveralls are only one component of the full ESD protection system. Wearing them alone cannot completely eliminate static risks. In actual production, supporting facilities such as anti-static workbenches, grounding wrist straps and anti-static flooring are also required to build a complete static control plan. As manufacturing industries keep moving toward higher precision, requirements for static and particle control across sectors keep rising, and conductive fabric weaving and garment processing technologies are continuously optimized. When purchasing in bulk, enterprises can select suitable styles and materials according to workshop conditions, static sensitivity grades and operation duration, and carry out full-lifecycle management covering usage, cleaning and inspection. This can effectively reduce component damage caused by static electricity, cut particle contamination brought by personnel, stabilize product yield and guarantee operational safety in workshops.
