  In industrial environments such as metallurgy, petrochemicals, energy manufacturing and foundry processing, thermal hazards including flames, high-temperature radiation, convective heat and splashes of molten metal constantly threaten the personal safety of operators.   EN ISO 11612 establishes a complete set of testing specifications for protective clothing made of flexible fabrics. It protects the wearer’s torso from various thermal injuries, covering typical industrial risks such as short-term flame contact, radiant heat, convective heat, contact heat, splashes of molten aluminium and molten iron. The standard defines a performance classification system using codes from A to F to distinguish protection capabilities. Code A covers the mandatory limited flame spread test, divided into A1 for surface ignition and A2 for edge ignition. Codes B to F correspond to protection against convective heat, radiant heat, molten aluminium splashes, molten iron splashes and contact heat respectively. Higher numbers indicate superior protection levels. Compliant products must pass Code A flame spread tests and at least one thermal protection test among B-F, eliminating low-quality protective clothing that only appears flame-resistant yet fails to withstand sustained high temperatures.

  Different from dedicated standards for arc protection and structural firefighting suits, EN ISO 11612 targets general industrial high-temperature working scenarios. It applies to multiple types of protective products including flame-resistant work uniforms, high-temperature aprons, protective hoods and gaiters, but excludes professional firefighting suits and arc flash protective clothing. Apart from fabric performance requirements, the standard imposes strict constraints on garment structure, stitching technology, hardware accessories, durability and retention of protective properties after washing and ageing. It prevents safety risks such as split seams, melted accessories and rapid loss of flame resistance after repeated cleaning.
