Flash Fire Protection Standard

News / 2026.09.17

Flash fire is a highly sudden and destructive high-risk disaster in industrial production. It is mostly caused by the instantaneous deflagration of flammable gases, volatile liquid vapors and combustible dusts. With fast flame propagation speed and high thermal radiation intensity, it can cause severe burns to the human body in a short time, serving as one of the major potential safety hazards in high-risk industries such as petroleum, chemical, gas, manufacturing and processing. The flash fire protection standard is a professional safety specification system formulated for flash fire disasters. It corely standardizes the performance of protective equipment, testing and certification criteria, and on-site protection requirements, reduces personnel injuries caused by flash fire accidents from the source, and strengthens the defense line of industrial safety production.

Currently, the globally recognized flash fire protection standards are centered on NFPA 2112 (Standard on Flame-Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Flash Fire) and EN ISO 11612 (Protective Clothing Against Heat and Flame). Among them, NFPA 2112 is the most widely used special flash fire protection specification in industrial scenarios. It focuses on the safety performance management of personal protective equipment for staff, applicable to all industrial operation scenarios with flash fire exposure risks. The standard clarifies the minimum performance requirements, rigorous test methods, production certification and labeling specifications for flame-retardant fabrics and protective garments, acting as the core basis for evaluating the compliance of industrial flash fire protective equipment.

In terms of core performance requirements, the standard sets rigid indicators for protective fabrics and finished garments. Fabrics must pass multiple basic tests including vertical flame resistance, heat shrinkage resistance and heat transfer performance, with stable capabilities of flame retardancy, heat insulation and thermal deformation resistance, avoiding secondary injuries caused by combustion melting and dripping. Finished protective clothing must pass the ASTM F1930 manikin flash fire simulation test. After being exposed to a 3-second instantaneous flash fire engulfment impact, the estimated human burn area shall not exceed 50%. High-quality compliant equipment can control the burn risk within 15%, maximizing the protection of operators' life safety. Meanwhile, the standard mandates that protective equipment shall have a complete traceable certification system, including permanent marks, production batches, specification parameters, maintenance instructions and compliance certification numbers, preventing unqualified protective products from being put into use.

In addition to equipment performance management, the flash fire protection standard also standardizes on-site application and management requirements. The supporting standard NFPA 2113 specifies the selection principles, wearing specifications, daily maintenance, regular inspection and scrapping standards of flash fire protective equipment. Enterprises are required to select equipment with corresponding protection levels according to the types of combustible media and flash fire risk levels of operation scenarios, and prohibit the use of modified, damaged and expired protective equipment. Meanwhile, enterprises shall establish a hierarchical risk control mechanism for flash fires, carry out risk assessment based on operating environments, and complete supporting emergency disposal procedures, so as to build an all-round flash fire protection system integrating equipment protection, standardized management and emergency support.

The implementation of standardized flash fire protection management is a core measure for safety production in high-risk industrial scenarios. Strict implementation of flash fire protection standards can effectively avoid casualties caused by substandard protective equipment and non-standard protection operations, standardize enterprise safety protection systems, improve the ability of industrial scenarios to respond to sudden flash fire disasters, provide reliable safety guarantees for frontline operators, and help enterprises achieve compliant and normalized safety production.
